Susan Kare explains how she joined Apple’s Macintosh team as an artist despite having little computer experience, and how its technical limits shaped the icons and fonts she designed. She describes principles behind effective visual communication: keep symbols simple, make them meaningful, and iterate with real constraints in mind. Stories about Happy Mac, the Command key symbol, and the bomb icon show how design choices can surprise or confuse users. She also shares work for later clients and advice from designers, colleagues, and family about making ideas visual, allowing time for iteration, and helping users feel capable.
