Dalton and Michael explain that a tarpit idea is unusually attractive, repeatedly attempted, and unsuccessful despite little changing in the circumstances that caused past failures. They distinguish tarpits from merely bad or common ideas, noting that new technology can make an old idea viable if founders can explain what changed. They discuss two recurring patterns: ideas that assume people will adopt a better way of living, and ideas promising quick riches through a temporary arbitrage. Their advice is to study prior attempts, connect the problem to what current technology makes possible, and talk to users rather than relying on feedback or lists of ideas.
