Werner Vogels traces how Amazon’s scaling challenges shaped its engineering culture, service architecture, and the creation of AWS. He explains how independent teams, customer feedback, working backwards, and small initial feature sets help Amazon build products while adapting to real usage. He also argues that cloud services can free teams from infrastructure work, but that security and cost choices need to be built into development from the start. The talk closes with advice for startups to choose architectures and cloud services that fit the kind of company they want to build.
