Dalton Caldwell and Michael Seibel explain why startups often fail when founders chase exciting technology or outside approval without understanding a real customer problem. They argue that “follow your passion” is most useful when it means working on problems you know firsthand, or pursuing interests you would keep even without money or approval. Passion can also grow from progress: users, revenue, and a business that works can make founders care more deeply about customers and their product. Founders can sustain motivation by setting clear goals, working with friends, and choosing intrinsic rewards over fame, funding, or status.
