Mike Grabowski, co-founder of Callstack and a React Native engineer, discusses React Native EU and the community with Wojcik at the 2023 conference in Wrocław.

A conference built around connection

Grabowski says he was glad to meet people in person again after the pandemic, noting it had been about three years since the community gathered in Wrocław. He describes the conference as a mix of technical talks, broader topics, future-focused sessions, business panels, and keynotes.

How React Native EU grew

Grabowski and Anna started the conference to give people a way to meet, at a time when there were no React Native-focused conferences. He recalls that Barbara organized the first event six years earlier and has continued to lead the organizing work with a larger team.

Making opportunities to connect

Grabowski sums up the conference as creating opportunities for people to connect. He says it can bring together people who might otherwise be unlikely to meet, including people from Silicon Valley living in Kraków or Wrocław.

React Native becomes enterprise-ready

Grabowski contrasts early React Native work, including publishing releases from the CLI without two-factor authentication, with a more stable project today. He points to the community and RFC process as signs of its development, and says the technology is now enterprise-ready.

Growth can happen gradually

Grabowski says Callstack had grown to more than 170 employees, a size that surprised him because he had stopped counting around 60. He also encourages Wojcik, who joined Callstack at 17 after completing a test, and relates the experience to starting a business when he was young.

Takeaways

  • Build events that help people meet across roles, companies, and locations.
  • A conference can grow while keeping its original purpose and organizers involved.
  • Use community practices such as RFCs to support a maturing technology.
  • Recognize that team growth can be gradual enough to go unnoticed.
  • Assess young candidates by their work and contributions, not age alone.
