Laborde describes mobile apps as a way to help people connect and share experiences. At Infinite Red, his team collected out-of-context quotes in Slack and played a guessing game, but contributors could see the answers and missed quotes from teammates they rarely encountered.
Who Said It?
Speaker
Gant Laborde, a React Native developer and core contributor at Infinite Red, presents his “Who Said It?” app at React Native EU 2020, hosted by Callstack.
Laborde argues that a seemingly simple list app has real mobile product challenges, including protecting private team information and preventing public spaces from being flooded. His app lets people create groups with a code, while company groups can restrict membership to verified email domains such as infinite.red.
The app uses a comic book style built with UI Kitten. Users can search, filter, and randomize quotes, view the contributor and date, and add quotes with optional context. Autocomplete helps select an author, and users can add authors who are not yet in the system.
Laborde says AWS Amplify supplied login, GraphQL operations, and Amazon Cognito protections, while a Lambda function handled moving users between groups. UI Kitten's theming tools let him generate a color theme, and Amplify's Authenticator provided features such as password reset and email verification.
Laborde walks through configuring Amplify in the app entry point and wrapping the home screen with Authenticator. For quote creation, the app calls a generated GraphQL mutation; Amplify also generates queries and subscriptions from the schema. He built the project for the conference and invited viewers to ask him about the implementation.
Takeaways
- A small team game can reveal product needs around privacy, access, and who gets represented.
- Use group codes and verified email domains to control who can view or contribute to shared content.
- A component library and theme generator can help developers build a consistent interface quickly.
- Generated GraphQL operations can reduce the amount of backend code an app team must write.
- Authentication services can cover common flows such as password reset and email verification.
