Graham says startups have always faced many of the same challenges, but describes YC’s current companies as more serious in their aims. Examples include intercontinental cargo delivery and cancer research. He says ambition helps founders persist through the difficult work of building a company.
Paul Graham On Startups, Ambition, and Great Founders
Speaker
Paul Graham, YC co-founder, discusses startups, founder ambition, AI, and YC with a host at YC’s original offices in Mountain View.
Graham says founders are often driven day to day by the fear that something will fail, such as a server crashing, rather than by the prospect of becoming rich. He describes founders as formidable when they can get what they want across different situations. He also cautions that starting a company is too difficult to treat as a résumé credential.
Graham argues that founders can still start with limited money by reaching a milestone and raising funds for the next stage. A rocket company might begin with a design, simulation, or expert feedback rather than a completed rocket. He says AI has not changed the importance of shipping quickly, though GPU and token bills have become a major expense.
Graham says a YC batch gives founders peers to learn from and potential early customers among other startups. YC began as an angel firm idea, then adopted batches partly as an alternative to summer jobs for college students. He says YC has changed little in structure as it has grown, and that major future companies will come from formidable founders with promising ideas.
Takeaways
- Let the work and the problem drive you through setbacks; wealth is a distant outcome.
- Treat a startup as a demanding commitment, not a credential.
- Use available resources to reach a credible milestone, then seek funding for the next stage.
- Keep shipping quickly; AI tools do not replace the need to generate and execute good ideas.
- Use peer groups as both a source of practical help and a first place to find users.
