Should the Reanimated library be brought into React Native core?

Speakers

Wojtek and Mike from Callstack discuss whether Reanimated belongs in React Native core during a conversation about the React Native EU conference.

Keep the core lean

Wojtek says React Native should remain lean and separate from libraries. It already includes the Animated API, which could be extended, but he does not think that means the full Reanimated library should be added to core.

What Lean Core changed

Mike agrees with keeping core lean and explains that the Lean Core effort removed code such as WebView so React Native could be smaller and those pieces could be replaced or maintained separately. Callstack now maintains some extracted libraries, including React Native Slider and Pager View.

More removals may follow

Mike says people had asked about modules that were expected to be removed but remained after the initial Lean Core sweep. He thinks another round of removals may happen, though he is unsure what will happen with the animation-related module.

Maintaining a module takes commitment

Mike says React Native contributors are needed when modules are removed from core. Taking ownership can bring someone into the community, but maintaining a module carries real responsibility and is a substantial open-source commitment.

Takeaways

  • Keep a framework's core small when independently maintained libraries can provide the needed features.
  • An API already in core does not necessarily justify adding a larger library alongside it.
  • Removing a module works best when maintainers are ready to take ownership.
  • Treat open-source maintenance as an ongoing responsibility, not just an initial expression of interest.
