How to build super apps with React Native and Re.Pack?

Jun 6, 2023· 9 min· 6.2K views·Watch on YouTube

Callstack’s speakers discuss building super apps with React Native, Re.Pack, and Module Federation, using the Super App Showcase template in a demo.

Re.Pack and Module Federation

The speakers describe Re.Pack as an alternative bundler for React Native that lets developers use webpack and its plugin ecosystem. Its Module Federation support lets an app download remotely hosted code, so teams can build and deliver features independently.

The Super App Showcase

Callstack’s public GitHub template demonstrates a super app built with Re.Pack and Module Federation. It uses a monorepo, though the speakers say that setup is optional, and includes a mini app maintained in a separate repository.

Mini apps in the demo

The demo moves from an Auth mini app sign-in screen to a dashboard and services such as Booking, Shopping, and News. Each service opens a navigator exposed by another app; News comes from a separate repository. The mini apps can also run independently as applications.

Tradeoffs and team independence

The speakers say the user experience resembles a normal app, though loading remote modules may add waits or spinners. The architecture is complex, but separate teams can build features independently and reuse an app’s functionality in another app without copying or reimplementing it.

Over-the-air updates

Re.Pack can deliver JavaScript updates to a host app without sending each change through the usual store release process. The speakers compare this benefit to CodePush and note that the showcase template is still being developed.

Takeaways

  • Use Module Federation when teams need to build and release app features independently.
  • Keep mini apps deployable on their own if they may also serve as standalone products.
  • A monorepo can organize a super app, but the example shows it is optional.
  • Account for remote module loading delays in the user experience.
  • Re.Pack can update JavaScript features remotely, while the overall architecture adds complexity.
