Speaker

Callstack developer Tomek Miśkiewicz joins host Thomas on React Universe On Air’s Coffee Talk #12 to review the Stack Overflow 2023 Developer Survey and discuss its technology trends.

How developers learn

Technical documentation led the survey’s online learning resources, with Stack Overflow in second place. The hosts also discussed blogs and how-to videos, and Miśkiewicz said he often looks to docs and blogs because they are quicker to scan.

Languages, platforms, and frameworks

JavaScript ranked first among technologies at 63%, while TypeScript was at 38% and Python placed third. AWS led cloud platforms at 48%, ahead of Microsoft Azure at 26%. React topped web frameworks, and the hosts noted that Node.js, jQuery, and WordPress also remained widely used.

Cross-platform development and developer tools

The hosts compared Flutter and React Native, noting that Flutter had higher usage among respondents learning to code, while React Native had 54% admired and 11% desired. They wondered whether respondents’ views reflected older React Native experiences and observed that Expo was not listed separately. Visual Studio Code led IDEs with 73%, far ahead of Visual Studio at 28%.

Communication and AI tools

Microsoft Teams ranked first among synchronous communication tools at 51%; Miśkiewicz said he preferred Slack, while the hosts discussed Teams’ enterprise reach and Zoom’s use for meetings. ChatGPT led AI search tools at 83%, and the hosts described using it for coding help while stressing that its output needs verification. GitHub Copilot led AI developer tools, with Copilot X preview features also discussed.

Admired and desired technologies

The hosts explained that admired tools are ones respondents use and would use again, while desired tools are ones they want to try. They highlighted Vercel at 69% admired and 12% desired, React Native at 54% and 11%, and AI search tools at 77% and 75%. They suggested that familiarity, awareness, and past experience may shape these ratings.

Takeaways

  • Treat survey results as a view of respondents, not a complete picture of all developers.
  • Use official documentation as a reference, and understand code before reusing examples from forums.
  • Check AI-generated code and type definitions before relying on them.
  • When evaluating a framework, distinguish current experience from memories of older versions.
  • Compare both adoption and respondent interest when assessing a developer tool.
