Speaker

Bartłomiej Błoniarz of Callstack discusses Reanimated’s roadmap, stability, shared element transitions, and AI coding tools with a host.

A broader animation toolkit

Reanimated aims to pair a CSS-style API, familiar to web developers, with Worklets for running arbitrary JavaScript on the UI runtime. The team is also developing deeper native integration, including using iOS Core Animation and its Render Server to run animation work on a separate thread.

Improving stability with the new architecture

Błoniarz says migrating ecosystem libraries to React Native’s new architecture has been a major pain point, though that work is nearly complete. Callstack is working with Meta on a shared compatibility layer so Reanimated can be tested against changes in React Native core and become more stable.

Why shared element transitions are difficult

Błoniarz describes Reanimated as a step up when projects need animation beyond React Native’s built-in Animated library. Shared element transitions are challenging because React keeps views within their rendered parent, while a transition moves an element between destinations. Unlike web View Transitions, which use snapshots, Reanimated aims to move the native view instance or create a copy that preserves state, which matters for keeping video playback continuous.

Using AI tools in development

Błoniarz says he has used Claude and Cursor, and likes fast models for synchronous prototyping and quick iteration. He also uses them to diagnose linker and build configuration errors. Multiple agents can help with independent tasks, but animation work often requires manual checks, making parallel agent workflows harder to manage.

Takeaways

  • A CSS-style API can make animation examples more accessible to developers coming from the web, while Worklets retain flexibility for custom UI-runtime logic.
  • Native animation primitives may let React Native animations use platform-specific threading and performance capabilities.
  • Shared element transitions require handling view identity and state across destinations, especially for continuously playing video.
  • Compatibility testing against React Native core changes can help reduce integration-related stability issues.
  • AI coding tools are most useful for rapid prototypes and well-scoped build fixes; manual animation checks can limit parallel agent work.
