Speaker

Amjad Masad, CEO and co-founder of Replit, discusses building software with AI and the future of work with a Y Combinator host.

Making software accessible to creators

Masad says Replit aims to help anyone who can read and write turn an idea into deployed software without managing the technical setup. The product evolved from an in-browser development environment to a natural-language coding agent, and now includes visual design tools. He says the company is building for creators such as product managers, designers, and entrepreneurs, rather than focusing on traditional developers.

What people are building

Masad describes personal, enterprise, and entrepreneurial uses for Replit. Examples include a physical therapist’s app for tracking clients’ bodies and mobility, healthcare tools built by families, and software for pool businesses and sports clubs. At companies, product teams can test more ideas, while operations teams build internal tools such as quote configurators to work with data across existing systems.

Designing agents and helping users adopt them

Masad says Replit releases new agent versions to match advances in AI, citing Agent 3’s long-running tasks and Agent 4’s parallel agents and design canvas. The canvas lets users plan or design while agents work in the background, and teammates can work in separate virtual machines. He expects a shift toward high-level goals and says users should experiment, learn what the tools can do, and retry projects as capabilities improve.

The company of the future

Masad sees future companies as relying broadly on builders and salespeople. Salespeople may focus more on education and helping organizations transform, while builders move to higher levels of abstraction as agents take on more tasks. He also describes a future where more employees act like founders, finding business problems and creating or assigning agents to solve them; at Replit, a team built support-queue prioritization and an HR onboarding platform.

Takeaways

  • Build for people blocked by technical setup, including domain experts and product teams.
  • Look for software opportunities in industries whose needs are easy to overlook.
  • Use agents in parallel so planning and design can continue while work runs.
  • Help enterprise champions demonstrate value through hands-on projects and education.
  • Give employees room to find operational problems and build targeted internal tools.
