Speaker

Callstack host and co-host Kuba Urban discuss recent Vercel, React, and React Native updates on React Universe On Air: Coffee Talk #10.

Next.js 13.4 updates

The host says the App Router is stable and recommends it for new Next.js projects. The release also adds server actions, which let server components call async functions to mutate data, and advances Turbopack from alpha.

Vercel services and collaboration tools

Vercel introduced Blob file storage, a Redis based key-value database, and PostgreSQL, which the hosts say is provided with Neon; Upstash provides the Redis service. They also discuss Code Spaces features for editing CMS content in a website preview and assigning code owners to review changes. Secure Compute offers private network connections, while Vercel Firewall includes DDoS mitigation and IP blocking.

React Canary release channel

The hosts describe Canary as a release channel for experimental features considered ready for broader use but not yet included in a stable React release. Framework teams can pin Canary versions to use features such as Server Components and report bugs; the React team says it will document breaking changes, while stable releases continue to follow SemVer.

React Native macOS 0.71

React Native macOS reached version 0.71 after skipping versions 0.69 and 0.70, catching up with the main React Native release. The hosts say Microsoft maintains it and collaborated with Meta; Messenger for Mac uses React Native macOS. The new architecture is available experimentally for macOS.

Takeaways

  • New Next.js projects can use the stable App Router, while server actions provide a direct way to mutate server side data.
  • Choose storage by data shape: Blob for files, Redis key-value for keyed data, or PostgreSQL for SQL.
  • Use React Canary when a framework needs eligible features before stable release, and track the React team's change notes.
  • React Native macOS 0.71 brings the platform closer to the main React Native release, with the new architecture still experimental.
