Speakers

Wookash of Callstack talks with Matt Carroll, a developer advocate on Meta’s React team, and Eli, a manager on the team, about React Conf 2024 and its plans for the React community.

Why React Conf is returning

Eli says the conference is returning in person after the pre-COVID edition because the React team has work to share and wants to bring the community together. He describes the community as central to React and frames the event as a chance to build toward React’s next 10 years.

A conference shaped by the community

Matt says the speaker lineup is still developing, with an open call for proposals closing February 28. He names React team members Joe, Saad, Lauren, and Mofi, plus Nola and Ricardo from React Native. Eli says this is the first React Conf with sponsors and that the event is intended to represent the wider community, not just Meta.

One track and room to connect

Matt says organizers are targeting a single-track program with about 20 speakers, leaving time for attendees to mingle and network. They want people across backgrounds, libraries, frameworks, and experience levels to feel welcome. A ticket lottery and diversity scholarships are intended to support broad representation.

In-person attendance and online access

Organizers expect around 650 people in person in Henderson, Nevada. They also plan a free livestream and recordings of the talks for people who cannot attend. Matt reminds prospective attendees to enter the ticket lottery before February 28.

Takeaways

  • A conference can make community participation part of its design through open speaker proposals and sponsorships.
  • A single-track schedule with about 20 speakers can leave substantial time for networking.
  • Ticket lotteries and scholarships are tools organizers can use to broaden who attends.
  • Free livestreams and recordings extend access beyond the in-person audience.
  • When a project spans multiple companies, its events can reflect that wider collaboration.
