The host says AI tools such as Claude Code are changing how teams work, with developers managing several AI instances at once. They describe 20X companies as startups that automate across internal functions, extending Parker Conrad’s idea of building multiple integrated products in parallel.
The New Way To Build A Startup
A Y Combinator host, joined by speakers from Rippling, GigaML, Legion Health, and Feathr, explains how startups use internal AI automation to stay lean and scale.
GigaML says it won DoorDash against much larger competitors with a team of about four to five engineers. Its Atlas agent handles tasks such as browser use, policy edits, and code, reducing integration boilerplate and roughly doubling or tripling each engineer’s scope. The company says one human employee works with Atlas to support more than 10 Fortune 500 pilots.
Legion Health built an internal interface that brings together patient history, scheduling availability, insurance codes, and other care information. The company says revenue and patient volume grew fourfold in a year without adding net staff, with a small team covering clinical leadership, patient support, and billing.
Feathr, a 12-person accounts receivable automation company, asks employees to document manual tasks and builds agents to handle them. The company says this approach has helped it delay hiring for functions such as design, using Magic Patterns for front-end work. The host says AI teammates, shared internal tools, and custom agents can be combined.
Takeaways
- Map recurring manual work before deciding which tasks to automate.
- Use agents to reduce customer-specific engineering work and expand what each engineer can handle.
- Give operations teams a shared interface with the context they need to act.
- Build automation around the actual workflows employees document.
- Track whether automation lets the team serve more customers without proportional hiring.
