Aaron Levie: Why Startups Win In The AI Era

Speaker

Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box, talks about enterprise AI and startup opportunities with a Y Combinator host and audience.

From cloud adoption to AI

Levie describes Box’s shift from consumer file sharing to enterprise software, which benefited from the growth of mobile and cloud computing. He says enterprise AI adoption differs from cloud adoption because many leaders already believe AI matters; the challenge is making it safe, reliable, and useful with company data.

AI can make company data useful

Levie distinguishes structured data, such as customer records, from unstructured data such as contracts, invoices, and presentations. AI agents can read and search that content, answer questions, and support workflows that were previously difficult to automate. He sees an opportunity to turn company information into a working asset.

Automation can expand what companies do

Levie argues that employees spend much of their time on necessary but nonstrategic work, while some valuable tasks go undone because hiring people for them costs too much. He gives translating ad campaigns into 100 languages as an example of work AI agents could make affordable. He expects small companies to use that capacity to serve more customers and enter more markets.

New markets and business models for startups

Levie says AI creates room for startups to build software for professional work that previously had no software solution. Instead of charging only per employee seat, companies may charge based on work volume, such as contract reviews; he suggests a review that costs an agent 10 cents could sell for $2. He expects a mix of consumption charges and subscriptions, with pricing depending on the software and workflow built around AI.

How founders can use the opportunity

Levie says companies will still buy software for work they consider context, where reliability and accountability matter, while AI coding tools can help them build software for core needs. His advice to aspiring founders includes studying markets and incumbents, finding a strong co-founder, and targeting work whose economics or process AI fundamentally changes. He urges founders to pursue ambitious ideas during the current opportunity window, which he estimates will last a few years.

Takeaways

  • Look for valuable work that companies leave undone because human labor makes it too expensive.
  • Build around unstructured company data that AI can now search and use in workflows.
  • Explore pricing tied to work completed, while retaining recurring revenue where customers need ongoing service.
  • Assess incumbents carefully and seek customers or use cases they do not serve well.
  • Choose a market where AI changes the underlying economics or process, and build with a strong team.
