Who Really Governs React Now? React Foundation Explained

Nov 21, 2025· 7 min· 272 views·Watch on YouTube

Speaker

Seth Webster, executive director of the React Foundation at Meta, discusses the foundation’s governance and scope with a Callstack host at React Conf in Henderson, Las Vegas.

How governance will work

For the first few years, Meta will retain a majority voting stake in governance and technical guidance to provide continuity. Webster said the foundation is still working out how to collaborate across companies and will learn from the Linux Foundation’s experience.

Why these companies are founding members

Webster said founding members were selected for their long-term contributions to React, including engineering work as well as financial support. He highlighted Callstack and Software Mansion for building foundational React Native libraries and sharing useful tools with the community.

How large and small partners complement each other

Webster said smaller companies contribute libraries that make React Native more usable, while larger companies can test ideas at scale. He gave the example that large-scale use can reveal an edge case in six hours that might take a typical company two or three years to encounter.

React includes React Native

Webster said he sees React and React Native as one project spanning the web, Android, iOS, and other devices. He emphasized the developer experience and the goal of helping more people build applications across platforms, rather than focusing on the underlying runtime or architecture.

The Linux Foundation’s role

Webster said the Linux Foundation helped develop the plan for the React Foundation and brings experience stewarding open-source projects. He expects its processes and expertise to support React’s stability and continued development, while Meta remains a steward.

Takeaways

  • Meta will retain majority governance and technical guidance votes for the foundation’s initial few years.
  • Founding membership reflects sustained engineering contributions as well as financial support.
  • React Native libraries from smaller companies and large-scale testing by bigger companies serve complementary roles.
  • Webster views React as a cross-platform developer experience that includes React Native.
  • The Linux Foundation is expected to provide governance experience and support long-term project stability.
