Building High-Performance Marketing Websites

Speaker

Lee Robinson, director of developer relations at Vercel, discusses building high-performance marketing websites at React Miami.

Marketing sites serve customers and growth

Robinson focuses on e-commerce, media, and software sites, where pages can both represent a business and drive product growth. Customers expect sites to load quickly around the world, stay available, and personalize content to their needs.

Performance depends on user and developer experience

Developers need fast release cycles, tools for team experiments, and tooling that helps avoid performance mistakes. Robinson points to common problems such as sites served from a single region, slow builds, and client-side A/B tests that cause layout shifts.

Measure real-world experience

Robinson explains Core Web Vitals as measures of loading speed (LCP), interaction responsiveness (FID), and layout stability (CLS). He recommends tracking these field metrics over time and using lab tools such as Lighthouse before release.

Choose rendering and caching for changing content

A CMS-driven banner or personalized call to action can be served statically, rendered on the server, or streamed as data arrives. Static pages load quickly but may require a deployment for content changes; server rendering can wait on the CMS. Robinson describes streaming and targeted edge-cache invalidation as ways to deliver changing content sooner.

Connect marketing pages to the product

Robinson recommends making product and marketing pages feel like one experience. On Vercel's homepage, logged-in users can see recently pushed repositories and import one, while logged-out users see options to connect a Git provider or start from a template.

Takeaways

  • Track Core Web Vitals in production and use lab measurements before release.
  • Serve assets close to visitors to reduce request latency.
  • Run experiments without shifting page layout.
  • Match the rendering and cache strategy to how often content changes.
  • Speed up local development, review, and deployment so teams can iterate sooner.
