Speaker

Ebi Atawodi, director of product for YouTube Studio at YouTube, talks with Peter Yang about shaping Studio’s vision, building for creators, and connecting personal purpose to work.

Studio as a creative partner

Atawodi describes Studio as a creative partner that helps creators tell stories in their own way and connect with their communities. The product should meet creators where they are, rather than act as an oracle that claims to know what every creator needs.

Building a vision with the team

After joining in 2022, Atawodi spoke with about 40 people and used the same five questions to find shared concerns and priorities. A four-day workshop turned those insights into a vision centered on expression and connection, then grouped product needs into five themes: accessible, connected, supported, empowered, and personalized.

Balancing creator needs and platform work

Atawodi says platform product managers need strong product sense because they serve creators through many partner teams. Shared foundations, such as a reusable collection framework, can help teams support playlists, podcasts, and future products without rebuilding the same capabilities. Studio’s principles include building for creators first and making the product work across formats such as Shorts, live, and long-form video.

Products for different creator stages

Atawodi describes three stages: finding a voice, refining it, and sustaining it. Studio Mini was designed to give new creators basic analytics and comment management in the main YouTube app, while mobile analytics, Content Hub, and Community Hub support creators who want to go deeper. For established creators, milestone celebrations and the Inspiration tab can provide motivation and help prevent burnout.

Purpose beyond a job title

Atawodi describes her purpose as empowering and inspiring people through stories, and says personal creative projects have made her more empathetic to creators. She encourages people to define themselves by a fuller story than their job title, which can bring more balance and meaning to work. Her short documentary Dùndún follows the community involved in making a Yoruba talking drum.

Takeaways

  • Interview a broad group with consistent questions before setting a team vision.
  • Use simple exercises, such as future headlines and product sketches, to surface shared priorities.
  • Build reusable platform capabilities around end-user needs so partner teams can move faster over time.
  • Design for creators at different stages and across formats, devices, and levels of experience.
  • Encourage teams to experience the customer’s work and pain points firsthand.
