Claire argues that product teams spend too much time discussing frameworks and processes, and too little time discussing what they are building. Frameworks can help teams work, but they cannot guarantee a successful product. She wants teams to reward strong ideas, execution, and proof of work.

Speaker
Claire Vo, former CPO of Color and Optimizely, discusses product management careers, team practices, and AI with Peter Yang on the Peter Yang channel.
Claire says PM career ladders often tie advancement to managing larger teams, even though PM organizations have fewer roles and grow more slowly than engineering teams. At her company, the IC ladder extends to the C-suite, with titles, pay bands, and expectations for senior ICs, including a Chief Product Innovation Officer. She describes those senior PMs as skilled, detail-oriented, well-connected, and able to direct work without formal authority.
Claire says more iterations give teams more chances to find promising ideas, while extensive planning cannot guarantee the right answer. She advises choosing a direction and getting real products in front of customers to learn. Engineers, designers, and salespeople can all contribute valuable product ideas.
After finding that meetings took up 80% of her day, Claire canceled recurring one-on-ones with her senior team and reclaimed focused work time. She replaced them with longer, deeper meetings and more flexible access when people needed her. She says this approach depends on having a senior team and established credibility.
Claire describes building ChatPRD from a product copilot she created for herself. It helps draft PRDs, find gaps in existing documents, and give PMs feedback on their work. She expects AI tools to help PMs build prototypes and test ideas with customers, bringing product and design work closer together.
Takeaways
- Create an IC career ladder with senior titles, compensation, and responsibilities that match management levels.
- Use frameworks to support product work, while judging PMs by the ideas they develop and the outcomes they pursue.
- Choose a direction, ship something customers can try, and use feedback to guide the next iteration.
- Protect focused time for building and deep problem-solving, especially when recurring meetings crowd out that work.
- Use AI to get a first draft or prototype moving, then spend time improving the details and customer experience.
