Speaker

Geoff Ralston of Y Combinator talks about why founders need a compelling story for their startup and how it helps them persist and bring others along.

Why a startup story matters

Ralston says startups are extremely difficult, and setbacks are inevitable. A story founders believe can help them keep going when things go wrong; without one, they may quit.

What makes a story compelling

Ralston draws on ideas from YC partner Aaron Harris and an example attributed to E. M. Forster. A sequence of events becomes more meaningful when it reveals a human connection, such as a queen dying from grief after the king dies.

Tell the story to yourself and others

Founders tell people what they are building and the future they hope to create, from friends and family to customers, partners, and investors. Ralston says the story needs to resonate most with the founders themselves, while also helping persuade others to join an uncertain journey.

Rework the story as needed

Ralston says YC helps founders craft their stories and sometimes rethink them. A startup’s story can sustain its founders through setbacks and help others understand why they should take part.

Takeaways

  • Build a story that helps you persist through setbacks.
  • Give your startup story a human reason to matter.
  • Make sure the story resonates with you before trying to persuade others.
  • Adapt how you explain the startup for friends, customers, partners, and investors.
  • Revisit the story when it no longer helps you or others understand the mission.
